Canada falls 5-1 to U.S. in world junior hockey championship semifinal

Canada will play for the bronze medal at the world junior hockey championship after losing 5-1 to the United States in Thursday’s semifinal.

Captain Jake McCabe and John Gaudreau each score twice for the U.S. and Jim Vesey also scored.

Goaltender John Gibson stopped 26 shots for the win.

Ty Rattie scored a short-handed goal for Canada.

Canadian goaltender Malcolm Subban was replaced by Jordan Binnington in the second period after U.S. had scored four goals on 16 shots.

Defending champion Sweden and host Russia were to meet in the later semifinal.
