Rogers to expand network, cable operations in $700M deal with Shaw

Rogers Communications Inc. is expanding its network and cable operations in a deal worth $700 million.

Toronto-based Rogers confirmed Monday that it has signed an agreement to purchase Mountain Cablevision Ltd. in Hamilton from Shaw Communications Inc.

Rogers will also look to purchase Shaw’s wireless spectrum (AWS) holdings in 2014 – a move that will “ensure our customers continue to enjoy the incredibly fast speeds and throughput they crave,” Nadir Mohamed, Rogers president and CEO, said in a release.

AWS spectrum is a wireless telecommunications spectrum band used for mobile voice and data services, video and messaging.

In return, Shaw will acquire Rogers’ one-third interest in the TVtropolis channel and will enter into negotiations with Rogers for undisclosed services in Western Canada.

The sale would give Shaw 100 per cent ownership of TVtropolis – a specialty TV network seen across Canada.

Under the deal, Rogers would continue to have access to TVtropolis content for broadcast to all of its cable subscribers.

The deals must still approved by the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission.
