The Baltimore Ravens have won their second Super Bowl in franchise history, topping the San Francisco 49ers 34-31 in a thrilling game that came down to the last minute.
After a dominating first half, the Ravens appeared on their way to a blowout victory before the power went out following the halftime show, causing the game to be delayed for more than 30 minutes.
That delay seemed to spark the 49ers, who responded by scoring several touchdowns in quick succession to bring the game within several points.
With only minutes to go the 49ers had themselves yards away from what would have likely been a winning touchdown. The Ravens were able to use their notorious defence to clamp down, however, forcing a turnover on downs.
That was all they would need, as the Ravens were able to hold the ball to drain nearly the entire remainder of the clock, ensuring the win.
Ravens’ quarterback Joe Flacco was impressive in the game, throwing three first-half touchdown passes to cap an 11-TD, zero-interception post-season.
Flacco was named MVP of the Super Bowl, likely beating out teammate Ray Lewis by a narrow margin.
In one of many exciting plays, Ravens’ kick returner Jacoby Jones returned the second-half kickoff 108 yards, a Super Bowl record.
The Ravens’ Ray Lewis played what will be the last game of his career, capping his Hall of Fame career with a second Super Bowl win. The controversial linebacker is considered by many to be the greatest linebacker to ever play the game.
Both teams came into the big game undefeated in Super Bowl play in their histories, with the 49ers now falling to a still-impressive 5-1.
Despite looking shaky early, 49ers’ quarterback Colin Kaepernick was impressive in the second half, putting the 49ers in a great position to win.
Adding to the intrigue of the game was the power outage that happened in the second-half, pausing play for approximately 35 minutes. That had never previously happened during the Super Bowl, and it’s still unclear what was behind the outage.
Also getting a lot of coverage was the halftime show, which featured a performance by Beyonce and Destiny’s Child. That performance got mixed reviews, with most applauding the production value but some disheartened by the actual performance.
