Zombie romance ‘Warm Bodies’ tops weekend box office

Warm Bodies, a romantic comedy with zombies, topped the weekend box office, taking in US$ 19.5 million.

The movie is based on the novel of the same name by Isaac Marion and stars X-Men actor Nicholas Hoult as “R,” an undead teenager. He eventually meets and falls in love with a living girl, with the help of his also-undead best friend.

Hansel and Gretel, a re-telling of the classic fairytale, came in second with $9 million, according to movie-tracking website boxofficemojo.com. The movie follows the adult Hansel and Gretel, who have escaped from the gingerbread house and now spend their lives hunting witches.

Silver Linings Playbook, which has garnered Golden Globe and Screen Actors Guild awards for star Jennifer Lawrence, came in third with $8 million.

Last weeks’ No. 1 and No. 2 movies, Mama and Zero Dark Thirty, rounded out the top five.
