New Molson ad plays up Canadian pride

We’re the best, and people around the world are charmed by us. That’s the message of a new ad meant to engender pride among Canadians — oh, and to sell some beer.

Molson Coors Brewing Co. is revisiting familiar territory with its “The Canadians” ad, which the company posted on YouTube on Sunday and already has more than a million views.

The 1 ½-minute-long video features locals from Berlin, Dublin, Cape Town, “somewhere in Australia” and Tokyo telling stories about travellers they met who were so fun and wacky that their escapades were worth mentioning.

The punch line: the travellers are all Canadian.

The reaction online has been mixed. Though at least one commenter called the ad “excellent,” others weren’t as impressed.

“As a Canadian who lives over seas (and have lived in both Australia, and Cape Town) this commercial is [expletive] embarrassing… other than the fact it’s on youtube, I hope it doesn’t make it out of the country,” David G wrote.

The commercial — which was conceived by Toronto agency Rethink and will hit the airwaves on Monday — comes more than a decade after Molson’s enormously successful Joe Canada campaign.

That ad debuted during the Oscars telecast in 2000 and featured an “average Joe” ranting about Canadian stereotypes.
