Canadian actor Kiefer Sutherland helped celebrate the life and career of his mother, actress and activist Shirley Douglas, when she was given the ACTRA award of excellence on Saturday night.
The ACTRA awards honour excellence in Canadian television, film and radio.
Sutherland told 680News showbiz editor Gloria Martin his mother has been the driving inspiration for his own career.
“Watching her career helped inform me to make the decision I made to become an actor,” Sutherland said. “I would come over to the theatre and do my homework since I was 11 years old.”
The career of Douglas includes appearances on the Stratford stage and TV roles on Road to Avonlea and The Wind at my Back.
She is the daughter of the former premier of Saskatchewan and father of Canadian universal health care, Tommy Douglas.
