Swords, guns among weapons seized in TCHC sweep: police

Bats, swords and a sawed-off shotgun were among the weapons seized by Toronto police in a sweep of public housing buildings last week.
The weapons were taken from common areas in Toronto Community Housing Corp. properties, including the hallways, light fixtures, mechanical and electrical rooms and laundry rooms, police said at a news conference Monday.
“The searches were conducted as a result of the identified need to address the presence of violence and gunplay at TCHC sites. Residents are entitled to a safer environment,” Insp. Shaun Narine said.
Handguns, knives, drugs, ammunition and stolen items were also found in the sweep. Police carried out the raid beginning Thursday after a string of fatal shootings of 15-year-old boys on or near TCHC properties.
Jarvis Montaque, a Grade 10 student at Father Henry Carr high school, was killed outside a TCHC building on Jamestown Crescent in Rexdale on Feb. 17.
St. Aubyn Rodney was shot at 40 Turf Grassway, near Jane Street and Finch Avenue West, on Feb. 11.
And Tyson Bailey, a high school football star, was killed near the troubled Regent Park neighbourhood on Jan. 18 and left to die in a stairwell.
