Toronto teen a finalist in Canada Post stamp contest

A 13-year-old Toronto girl is one of five finalists in the 2013 Canada Post Community Foundation stamp design contest.
Alexandria Swartz’s entry, titled Spending Time With Loved Ones, depicts her and her grandfather walking through the forest.
“My papa, that’s who’s in the photo. He lives in Coldwater, in Barrie, and whenever we go up there we always walk together in the forest,” she told CityNews.ca.
The contest was open to children from across Canada 15 years or younger. The original artwork submitted was to raise awareness of the issues faced by children and youth and to reflect the diversity of Canadian youth, their creativity and their hopes for the future.
Alexandria said her design reflects the importance of family.
“I chose the image because I find knowing that people love you and knowing that you are loved is very important and it’s very important to spend time with those who love you,” she explained. “I know lots of kids that don’t even eat dinner with their families.”
The Grade 8 student from CR Marchant Middle School said she’s had a lot of support from her family and her classmates, particularly when they found out her design had made it to the top five.
“They’re all very excited about this. One of my teachers, my art teacher Mr. Richards, did [a] little dance and did a little ‘woo’ in class.”
The winning stamp will be chosen in September and available for purchase.
