Federal Liberal leadership hopefuls to deliver final speeches Saturday

The candidates vying for the federal Liberal leadership will have one last chance to woo undecided voters on Saturday.

They will deliver their final speeches at the national showcase, being held at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre in downtown Toronto.

Each of the six remaining candidates will get 25 minutes on stage to try and sway Liberal members and supporters to their side.

For most still in the race, it will be an uphill battle because polls show candidate Justin Trudeau has a commanding lead.

Keith Brownsey, a political scientist at Mount Royal University, said it’s like “Trudeaumania” for a new generation.

“You talk to young people and they’re certainly focused on Justin Trudeau. What they like about him I don’t think they know, but he is very popular with young people. He can relate to them extraordinarily well,” Brownsey said.

Aside from the candidates, former prime minister Paul Martin and interim Liberal leader Bob Rae will also deliver speeches.

After the showcase, each campaign will focus on getting out the vote. General voting online and over the phone will begin the next day, Sunday, and ends at 3 p.m. ET April 14.

The new leader will be announced at an events held at the Westin Hotel in Ottawa late afternoon April 14.
