Blue Jays’ Reyes expected to miss 3 months

By The Canadian Press

Toronto Blue Jays general manager Alex Anthopoulos announced Saturday that shortstop Jose Reyes is expected to miss three months with a left ankle sprain.

Toronto placed Reyes on the 15-day disabled list earlier on Saturday and recalled shortstop Munenori Kawasaki from the triple-A Buffalo Bisons.

Kawasaki has appeared in two games for Buffalo this season, going 2-5 with one RBI and two walks.

There is no word on how much playing time Kawasaki is expected to receive, but according to MLB insider Ken Rosenthal, Maicer Izturis will act as the team’s primary shortstop in Reyes’ absence.

Reyes sprained his ankle while stealing second base during the sixth inning of the Blue Jays’ 8-4 win over the Kansas City Royals Friday. Blue Jays general manager Alex Anthopoulos said after the game that he expected Reyes to miss one to three months.

In 38 at-bats this season, Reyes has 15 hits, one home run, five RBI, five stolen bases and a slash line of .395/.465/.526/.991.

Kawasaki signed a minor league deal with the Blue Jays in mid March and started the 2013 season with the Triple-A Buffalo Bisons.

The 31-year-old former Japan national team member played 61 games with the Seattle Mariners last season where he had 20 hits, seven RBI and two stolen bases in 115 plate appearances.

Kawasaki is not known for his offence but his defensive play has fetched him some high praise over the years.

The addition of Kawasaki means the Blue Jays now have 40 players on the 40-man roster.
