Special weather statement issued for Toronto, GTA

Environment Canada has issued a special weather statement for Toronto and parts of the GTA, warning that an approaching cold front could bring thunderstorms and winds gusting up to 80 km/h on Friday.

Earlier Thursday a severe thunderstorm watch was issued for areas north and west of Toronto, including Caledon, Barrie, Waterloo and Orillia.

The agency says the storms could bring large hail, damaging winds or heavy rainfall Thursday afternoon.

“We’ve seen thunderstorms and lightning strikes, first off the waters of Lake Huron and then sliding their way across the tip of Georgian Bay towards Barrie,” weather specialist Frank Ferragine said.

Up to 15 millimetres of rain is expected to fall on the city on Friday, ushering in a cooler-than-average weekend with highs of just 7 C.
