$19.1M raised for 6th annual Ride To Conquer Cancer

More than 5,000 cyclists are pedalling between Toronto and Niagara Falls for the sixth annual Ride To Conquer Cancer.

The charity bike ride kicked off at Ontario Place Saturday morning, and organizers say they’ve raised $19.1 million so far this year for the Princess Margaret Cancer Foundation.

Denise Dorfman, the ride’s director, started the tradition six years ago with her sister, who later died of cancer.

“Because of the treatment she got at Princess Margaret her life was extended an extra 6 1/2 years that she had with her young daughters,” Dorfman said.

“Sadly we did lose her in 2009, but we ride today in her honour.”

Cyclists will cover more than 200 kilometres over two days, with a number of routes to choose from — including a trek from Toronto to Niagara Falls.

The ride starts and finishes at Ontario Place and cyclists ride both ways between Toronto and Niagara Falls, camping overnight in Hamilton. Click here to see route maps.

Expect delays and road closures along the route for the entire weekend.
