OTTAWA, Ont. – The Conservative government faced another barrage of questions on the Senate expense scandal, but the tone has intensified after the RCMP launched an investigation into the secret $90,000 deal.
Senator Mike Duffy received a personal cheque for that amount from the Prime Minister’s Chief of Staff at the time, Nigel Wright.
“Has anyone on that side of the house seen a copy of this cheque that seem to know so much about and if so have they handed it over to the police?” an unnamed critic asked Friday on Parliament Hill.
The government didn’t shed more light on the scandal or the investigation launched by the mounties.
According to Macleans political writer Aaron Wherry this case could drag on for years.
“And as long as there isn’t resolution through complete exhoneteration or a conviction this just goes on and on,” Wherry said.
“First there will be a stretch where everyone will be waiting to see what the investigation determines. Then anything short of exhoneration at that point means that your into people have been charged or there is a trial or things like that. This could stretch on for years.”
While this is a serious political crisis, Wherry said it hasn’t yet reached the level of the sponsorship scandal that brought down the liberal government.
