Woman facing assault charge against Mayor Ford speaks

A woman facing an assault charge for allegedly throwing a drink at Mayor Rob Ford issued a statement through her lawyer, her first comments on her arrest.

Shannon Everett, 27, was accused of tossing a cup of juice at the mayor during the Taste of Italy event on Saturday. He was not injured. Everett was charged with assault and is expected at Old City Hall courthouse on July 23.

Lawyer Marie Henein said in a statement on Tuesday that she was surprised by Ford’s decision to comment on the case “outside the judicial forum.”

Ford and his brother Coun. Doug Ford spoke of the incident during their radio talk show on Sunday, saying that it was time to beef up their security in light of threats made during the mayor’s scandal that has rocked city hall.

“We are surprised by Mayor Ford’s decision to comment on the case repeatedly outside the judicial forum. This is most unfortunate,” Henein said in the statement.

“The Mayor should allow Ms. Everett to have her day in court, where we will vigorously defend the charge against her and a court of law will have the full opportunity to assess Mayor Ford’s credibility.”

Henein said her client is a yoga instructor and a multimedia developer who “has had no prior involvement with police.”

She said it’d be the only statement Everett would be providing now that the matter is before the court.
