TORONTO – Construction is underway on Yonge Street in North York for watermain replacement work.
Lane restriction will be in effect for the multi-phase project, which takes place on Yonge, from Finch Avenue to Sheppard Avenue.
Phase one of the construction — which starts Friday — is scheduled to be completed early December. During this phase, the southbound curb lane on Yonge Street, between Finch Avenue and Kingsdale Avenue, will be closed.
The City of Toronto said the project is expected to be completed by May 2014. Crews will be working daily from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m.
Work at intersections with traffic signals and on most water service connections will be done between 8 p.m. and 6 a.m.
Phase two, which starts Oct. 1, is expected to finish in March 2014 with road restoration work continuing into May 2014. During this time, Yonge will be closed from Kingsdale to Sheppard Avenue.
One lane will remain open for southbound traffic, with two lanes for southbound traffic at night and during the morning rush hour.
To ease traffic congestion during the project, traffic signals will be adjusted and left advance signals will be installed at some locations.
Commuters can use alternate routes like Bathurst Street, Senlac Road, Beecroft Road, Willowdale Avenue and Bayview Avenue.
Full details on the project and maps are available on the City of Toronto’s website.
A community meeting — to explain the timing, phasing and impacts of the project — will be held on Sept. 3, 7-8:30 p.m., at the North York Civic Centre.
