Province opens new Toronto jail for media tours

A new state-of-the-art jail capable of holding 1,650 inmates is slated to open in Toronto in the next few weeks.

The Toronto South Detention Centre is located at the former Mimico Correctional Centre at 160 Horner Ave. It replaces the aging Don Jail in the city’s east end and is built to be environmentally-friendly and have ultra-modern features.

The media got a tour of the state-of-the-art facility on Thursday morning, before it begins to house inmates.

An opening date has not been disclosed, but the centre’s director Rose Buhagiar told The Canadian Press she hopes it’ll be in the next few weeks.

The detention centre will have 53 different program rooms, including a mental health assessment unit, a multi-faith worship room and an aboriginal program room that’s equipped with a special ventilation system to allow for smudging ceremonies, she said.

A sweat lodge is also planned.
