TTC unveils new articulated buses

In just two months, the TTC will begin rolling out its new articulated buses, but the public got a sneak peek of the vehicles on Thursday.

TTC chair Karen Stintz, TTC CEO Andy Byford and deputy mayor Norm Kelly were on hand for the news conference at the TTC’s Hillcrest facility on Thursday morning.

Stintz tweeted a photo of the bus, using the hashtag #TTCBendyBuses.

The TTC has ordered 153 of the 60-foot accessible articulated buses at a cost of $143.7 million. The first bus will begin service in December on the 7 Bathurst route. The buses will roll out to other high demand routes next year and all of them will be in service by January 2015.

The stretch buses will be able to carry up to 77 riders, or nearly twice as many as a standard bus. The TTC said the buses will be more cost effective, as fewer operators will be needed.

It will also be faster to board and exit, as there are three doors instead of two.

The buses will be introduced on the following routes next year:

  • 29 Dufferin – first bus January 2014
  • 36 Finch West – Spring 2014
  • 63 Ossington – Summer 2014
  • 6 Bay – first bus Summer 2014
  • 85 Sheppard East – Fall 2014
  • 53 Steeles Express – Fall 2014
