Safety blitz finds hundreds of trucks pulled from road

Halton Police say nearly a third of the trucks they inspected during a safety blitz had to be pulled off the road.

Police inspected 403 commercial and light commercial trucks in Milton during a two-day blitz this week and found 157 vehicles failed the safety check.

According to police the safety checks could entail a thirty minute inspection upwards to a thorough one hour inspection of the vehicle from front to back.

Based on the inspected vehicle police enforcement achieved the following results:

  •  157 were taken out of service; a 39 percent failure rate.
  •  12 drivers were taken out of service (for driving in excess of regulated hours, licence suspensions and improper training in Dangerous Goods transportation).
  •  19 sets of plates were removed.
  •  249 charges laid under provincial legislation (Highway Traffic Act, Ontario Regulations etc).
  •  1 Federal drug arrest.

Police say they laid 249 charges.

The Halton Region Health Department would also like to note that two truck loads of unrefrigerated meat was found by inspectors. At this time 18 cases of meat were disposed of and the investigation is continuing. Police say charges are pending for the company and owner and the trucks were taken out of service by police for mechanical defects.
