Next phase of Eglinton Crosstown LRT set to start later this year

The next phase of the Eglinton Crosstown project is set to begin later this year.

The board of directors at Metrolinx announced that it’s awarded a tunneling contract to Aecon Dragados joint venture for work between Yonge Street and Brentcliffe.

Under the $177-million contract, the company will dig approximately 3.25 kilometres of twin tunnels using two tunnel boring machines.

Metrolinx president and CEO, Bruce McCuaig, called it another step forward in the project.

The light-rail transit line will run across Eglinton Avenue, between Weston Road and Kennedy station.

Construction is already underway, with service set to begin in 2020.

The 19-kilometre corridor will include a 10-kilometre underground portion between Keele Street and Laird Drive.

Metrolinx said the LRT will cut travel times on the bus from Kennedy station to Eglinton and Keele from 73 minutes to 38.
