Cyclist killed near Sheppard & Allen, driver facing charges

A cyclist who was struck by a vehicle near Sheppard Avenue and the Allen Expressway has died.

The 23-year-old man was hit at Yukon Lane around 10 a.m. on Wednesday as he attempted to cross the street at the intersection.

Const. Clint Stibbe told 680News the 20-year-old driver remained at the scene and will face charges in court on Thursday.

“The 20-year-old year man who was driving the BMW has been charged with dangerous driving causing death and criminal negligence causing death,” he explained.

The driver has been identified as Aleksey Aleksev from Toronto.

Stibbe said police have obtained video footage of the collision which also shows a group of people who came to the victim’s aid.

“What we are looking for is the six individuals that were assisting our victim as he was on the roadway,” he stated. “Three of these individuals have come forward already and we are looking for the other three.”

Stibbe said that even though the individuals may not have necessarily witnessed the actual collision, they are witnesses to the event and police would like to speak with them as soon as possible.

CORRECTION: The victim was a cyclist, not a pedestrian as earlier reported.
