Baird tells Canadians to keep guard up at Sochi

The International Olympic Committee remains confident in Russia’s ability to protect the Sochi Winter Games amid terror threats.

However, Canada’s foreign affairs minister is offering some words of caution to any Canadians making the trip.

The games open on Friday, and the president of the IOC Thomas Bach believes Russian authorities are doing their best to keep everyone safe.

“I have been assured that before coming here and I am still assured being here,” Bach said.

Canadian Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird has some advice for Canadians travelling to Sochi.

“We obviously encourage everyone to remain vigilant, to register on travel.gc.ca and we’ll obviously work with our friends and like-minded allies on these issues,” Baird said.

The IOC says Russia is running a massive security effort with tens of thousands of police and other security personnel.

The United Nations says Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon will be taking part in Friday’s opening ceremonies.

He’s called on warring parties, especially Syria, Central African Republic and South Sudan, to observe a truce during the games.
