Electronic joints have been showing up for sale in Toronto and online, but so far there are no studies about their safety or efficacy.
The product — called an eCigJoint — creates a dramatic plume like a real spliff and smells like the real thing, and the company that makes it claims it will produce a high.
The company also says the product is legal and contains only natural ingredients — and no THC, the active ingredient in marijuana.
The package, however, is missing the natural product number (NPN) Health Canada assigns to licensed products deemed to be safe, effective and of high quality.
Neither the agency nor the company that makes the eCigJoint responded to requests for an interview.
Naturopath Bryce Wylde said people should be careful about inhaling the ingredients in the e-joint, which include two amino acids known to reduce anxiety and the sleep agent melatonin.
“There are no safety or efficacy studies out there for inhaling any of these natural ingredients,” he said.
“Consumers need to be very wary about inhaling anything.”
