Thornhill riding remains PC after judge confirms recount

Thornhill will remain provincially blue after a judge confirmed that Ontario PC candidate Gila Martow took the seat in the June 12 election.

Elections Ontario declared a Progressive Conservative victory in the district Saturday after initially saying the Liberals had captured the GTA seat.

After the final tabulation was reviewed, Liberal candidate Sandra Yeung Racco had 21,783 votes, not the 21,837 originally reported.

Martow was thought to have 21,752 votes, but the final count has her at 21,868 and clinching the seat for her party.

Both PC and Liberal representatives learned of the error Friday while they oversaw the official tabulations at Elections Ontario.

Liberal Yeung Racco demanded a judicial recount.

On Tuesday a judge confirmed the results in favour of the Conservatives.

“Naturally I am disappointed at the outcome of the judicial recount, but at the same time I am relieved that there is no longer any doubt about the results from the June 12th election,” Racco said in a statement. “I believe the recount was necessary to provide clarity to all voters in Thornhill.”

Elections Ontario said the miscounts were caused by minor clerical errors.
