Toronto-bound QEW at Burlington Skyway closed until Monday due to crash

The OPP says a 34-year-old man is facing an impaired driving charge after a crash that’s closed all lanes of the Toronto-bound QEW at the top of the Burlington Skyway at least until Monday morning.
Witnesses said they watched in disbelief as a dump truck crashed into scaffolding on the bridge in a construction zone around 3:30 p.m., creating a traffic nightmare that could extend well into the weekend.
“I couldn’t believe what I was seeing, and then I heard other truckers honking but the guy kept going, he actually was going faster. It was so surreal,” said Robert Grimme. “I couldn’t believe what I was seeing. And the next thing you know, ‘Bang!’ ”
In a tweet, Minister of Transportation Steven Del Duca says that the Toronto-bound lanes would remain closed over the weekend, and into the holiday Monday:
Sukhvinder Singh Rai, from Brampton, faces charges of impaired driving and exceeding 80 milligrams of blood alcohol content. He is scheduled to appear in a Hamilton court on Aug. 22.
Rai received minor injuries in the crash.
“As a result of the collision, the bridge structure sustained significant damage,” the OPP said in a release. “Three other vehicles, a transport truck and two cars were also damaged subsequent to the initial collision.”
The Ministry of Transportation and engineers continue to gauge the amount of damage. Structural repairs continue.
