Voter support widens for Tory in Toronto mayoral race, poll finds

John Tory has taken a commanding lead over candidates Olivia Chow and Doug Ford in the Toronto mayoral race, according to a new poll.

The Ipsos Reid poll, which was conducted for Global News, gives Tory 43 per cent of voter support, Chow 29 per cent and Doug Ford 28 per cent.

This was the first Ipsos survey to be done since Rob Ford withdrew from the race for health reasons on Friday and his brother Doug jumped in.

The poll also found more than half of the nearly 600 people asked think it was appropriate for Doug to take over for his brother in the mayor’s race.

However, with six weeks left until election day, Ipsos CEO Darrell Bricker told Global News there’s still time for Tory to stumble.

The poll was conducted over the weekend, after Rob Ford dropped out.

A Forum Research poll done on Friday gave Tory 41 per cent support, Doug Ford 34 per cent and Chow 19 per cent.

Rob Ford is at Mount Sinai Hospital awaiting results of an abdomen biopsy. The mayor told The Toronto Sun that he’s also undergone a lung biopsy. Doug told The Globe and Mail that doctors could provide an update his brother’s medical condition on Wednesday afternoon.
