Fire crews remain on scene after a blaze in Brampton a destroyed two homes.

Officials say the fire started in a semi-detached home and quickly spread to the neighbouring residence.

Police tell CityNews they believe an explosion may have triggered the fire.

“We don’t know whether it was a gas leak or not,” Brampton deputy fire chief Brian Maltby explained. “We think there was an explosion of some sort and may be the explosion has caused the gas meters to become involved in this fire.”

Maltby said the reason they believe there was an explosion at the home is because the garage door was blown out.

Neighbours said the explosion shook their homes, making it feel like an earthquake.

Vic Singh, who lives in the area, said he was there when the distraught homeowner arrived on scene.

“She was crying and screaming so I rushed to her. I was concerned that maybe there was someone in the home,” he said. “I asked her several times ‘is there was someone in the home?’ and she said no so that was quite relieving.”

Singh said it was frightening to see just how fast the fire spread and the massive damage it caused.

“It’s a scary feeling, it’s really shocking,” he said. “The homes are both so close to each other and fire spread so rapidly from one home to the other and I saw it right before my very eyes. It’s a scary feeling.”

Several homes in the area were evacuated as a precaution.
