Broken water main in Scarborough and sink hole near High Park divert TTC

Pools of slushy water have engulfed Progress Avenue at Markham Road on Thursday morning.

Police have closed Progress west of Markham while crews work to clean up a broken water main.

The TTC’s 134 Progress bus was on diversion in the area, but has since cleared.

In the High Park area, a large sink hole opened up on Wednesday night near The Queensway and The Kingsway.

The two-metre wide, three-metre deep hole has forced police to close Coe Hill Drive and the TTC is diverting the 71 Runnymede bus.

Another broken water main was reported at Kennedy Road and Eglinton Avenue.

Toronto police have advised drivers to avoid the area.

On Wednesday, 24 water main breaks were reported, with one in the Avenue Road and Highway 401 area flooding a number of homes.

In Burlington, Harvester Road between Zelco Drive and Appleby Line south of the Queen Elizabeth Way is closed because of a watermain break.

Toronto gets on average about 1,100 water main breaks each year, resulting from the mechanical or structural failure of its underground pipes.
