Distracted driving deaths are expected to eclipse drunk driving fatalities for the seventh-straight year, Ontario provincial police said.
According to police, in 12 of the 51 fatal collisions this year, drivers were distracted behind the wheel.
In five cases, it was the distracted driver who died, while in two incidents the driver who died was driving properly at the time.
In three cases, a pedestrian was struck by a vehicle.
Police said the driving behaviours that result in loss of life on Ontario’s roads are preventable.
“Distracted driving is a danger to all road users. Fortunately, these same road users are in a position to help put a stop to it,” OPP Chief Supt. Chuck Cox said in a release.
The OPP are launching another distracted driving campaign this weekend and continue through March Break on all OPP-patrolled roads.
