York Region Transit bus takes out hydro pole in Markham

A York Region Transit (YRT) bus was impaled by a hydro pole on Wednesday morning in what nearby residents are calling an unsurprising incident.

Crews were called to the scene, at the corner of Henderson and Doncaster aveneus, around 8 a.m.

No one was injured.

Jason Jedig said the fact no one was hurt in the crash is thanks in part to the timing of the incident. A little later in the day, a crossing guard would have been directing school children across the intersection.

Jedig said he “knew exactly what it was” when he heard the sound of the bus and pole colliding.

“It happens quite a bit over there,” he said.

Jedig said cars tend to roll through the stop signs at the intersection.

“It’s a very bad intersection. Because it’s so many lanes of traffic they just assume it’s a faster flow here,” Jedig said.

YRT buses are diverting around the scene as crews work to clean up.

At its peak, about 4,200 PowerStream customers lost power due to the broken pole.

The hydro provider expects power to be back for the remaining 32 customers without power by 3 p.m.
