TTC CEO Andy Byford has fired two senior employees amid major cost overruns and delays for the Toronto-York Spadina Subway Extension (TYSSE).
In a memo leaked to reporters on Thursday, Byford said the TTC’s Chief Capital Officer Sameh Ghaly and Andy Bertolo, chief project manager for the TYSSE, “are no longer with the organization.”
“As CEO I felt a change in leadership at the TTC was required at this crucial time,” he said.
Byford also said he will release details on Friday morning about the project’s new timetable and additional costs. A report will be presented at the TTC board meeting next week.
Earlier this month, Byford told Mayor John Tory and TTC chair Josh Colle about the “possibility of a significant cost overrun” for the TYSSE — which will run from Line 1 (University-Spadina) through York University and up to Vaughan.
They said they didn’t have an exact figure, but a source told the Toronto Star the project was about $400 million over budget.
