Barrie patient tests negative for Ebola

A patient transferred to Toronto’s Sunnybook Hospital does not have Ebola, a negative test revealed Sunday morning.

Royal Victoria Regional Health Centre in Barrie said the patient recently returned from West Africa and was brought to the hospital north of Toronto on Saturday morning.

The hospital says doctors decided to transfer the patient to a designated Ebola response centre in Toronto as a precaution.

Ebola symptoms are similar to a number of other diseases such as malaria and typhoid fever.

Sunnybrook spokesperson Sybil Millar confirmed this morning that the patient’s test results had come back negative.

There has never been a confirmed Ebola case in Canada, though a number of people have been tested as a precaution since the massive outbreak in West Africa that is blamed for more than 10, 000 deaths.

What are the symptoms?

Symptoms include fever, sore throat, chills, muscle aches, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, impaired kidney and liver function, and internal and external bleeding.

It takes two to 21 days from the time a person is infected to when he or she shows symptoms.

Ebola is not contagious until symptoms appear, though that doesn’t mean a person cannot travel in the incubation period.
