It’s official, former secretary of state Hillary Clinton plans to run for president in 2016.
The announcement was made Sunday first through an email sent to supporters by Clinton’s top advisor.
“It’s official: Hillary’s running for president,” John Podesta writes in the email.
She then released her announcement video to kick off the campaign:
In the video Clinton states “Everyday Americans need a champion. I want to be that champion.”
If elected, Clinton would become the first woman to serve in the Oval Office.
She enters the race in a strong position to succeed her rival from the 2008 campaign, President Barack Obama.
Republicans wasted no time in taking jabs at their competition.
Former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush released a video Sunday criticizing Clinton’s foreign policy stance:
Then Kentucky Senator and Presidential candidate Rand Paul released an anti-Hillary campaign ad:
It will air in Iowa, New Hampshire, South Carolina and Nevada.
