The debate over the future of the eastern portion of the Gardiner Expressway has council very much split.
The two options for the 2.4-kilometres of the crumbling expressway are to tear it down (the boulevard option) or a hybrid option, touted by Toronto mayor John Tory, which would mostly maintain the elevated roadway for a 1.7-kilometre stretch and reroute the highway between Jarvis and the DVP.
A staff report showed the cheapest option would be tearing the elevated section down and converting the road into a boulevard at a cost of just over $400 million. The hybrid option would cost over $900-million.
