‘Degrassi’ moving to Netflix early next year after lengthy run on TeenNick ends in July

By The Associated Press

NEW YORK, N.Y. – Class will resume at Degrassi High as the beloved young people’s show finds a new campus on Netflix.

Renamed “Degrassi: Next Class,” the venerable series will premiere 20 new episodes globally on Netflix as well as on Canada’s Family Channel in early 2016, Netflix announced Tuesday.

This comes a week after TeenNick announced “Degrassi” would end its 14-season run on that network in July.

“Degrassi: Next Class” is the latest offshoot of a Canadian TV franchise reaching back to 1979.

The new stories will be targeted for the post-millennial teen crowd known as Generation Z.

Linda Schuyler, “Degrassi” co-creator and executive producer, notes that most of the new target audience wasn’t even born when the current version of “Degrassi” was created in 2001.
