Mississauga man faces impaired driving charges in Gardiner crash

Police have charged a Mississauga man after Thursday’s three-vehicle crash that shut down the westbound Gardiner Expressway for four hours during the morning rush hour.

A crew was out putting diamond markers on the high-occupancy vehicle (HOV) lane for the Pan Am Games, near Grand Avenue, when an Acura hit the rear of a crash truck that protects the workers around 3:30 a.m. The driver then hit a Ford van that ended up flipping over.

The driver of the Acura was was taken into custody at the crash scene.

Six people — three in the Acura and three in the minivan — were taken to hospital, but are expected to recover. None of the workers were injured.

Toronto police Const. Clint Stibbe said the crash could have been much worse if the crash truck had not been in place.

Jastaad Sagoo, 30, is charged with impaired operation of a motor vehicle causing bodily harm, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle causing bodily harm, and over 80 mgs causing bodily harm.

He is scheduled to make a court appearance on Aug. 7.
