680 NEWS has won a National Edward R. Murrow Award from the Radio Television Digital News Association (RTDNA) in the United States, making it the only Canadian radio or television station to win a national Murrow award.
The winning entry was for Audio Breaking News Coverage – Shooting on Parliament Hill.
“The coverage was a coordinated effort with the 680 NEWS team, Parliament Hill Correspondent Cormac MacSweeney and the team at 1310 NEWS in Ottawa. The reporting by Cormac MacSweeney, with gunshots echoing in the background, was incredibly riveting radio,” 680 NEWS director Scott Metcalfe said.
Other winning entries included submissions from CBS, ABC, NBC and CNN, so it is a rare honour for a Canadian news organization.
The RTDNA has been honouring outstanding achievements in electronic journalism with the Edward R. Murrow Awards since 1971. Award recipients demonstrate the spirit of excellence that Murrow set as a standard for the profession of electronic journalism.
The awards will be presented at the RTDNA Edward R. Murrow Awards Gala on Oct. 12 in New York City.
Earlier this year, 680 NEWS won five Edward R. Murrow Awards in large market radio category in the international division, which considers entries submitted from all over the world, except the United States which has its own category.
The awards won are overall excellence, best newscast (Dec. 11, 2014 at 9 a.m.), breaking news for the shooting on Parliament Hill, continuing news for coverage of then-mayor Rob Ford and best website.
