While much of Toronto is expressing outrage that American rap artist Kanye West will be the featured performer at the closing ceremonies of the Pan Am Games, the city’s mayor didn’t appear too upset about it – possibly because he wasn’t aware that Kanye isn’t Canadian.
“I won’t say that I spend every single night at home listening to his music, but, you know what, I’m smart enough to know that a lot of people do,” Tory told CityNews reporter Cynthia Mulligan when asked he was a Kanye fan. “And I’m smart enough to know that he’s a proud product of our music industry here, as are a number of others.”
Tory was responding to questions after announcing $371 million in funding to Toronto Community Housing over the next two years to clear up a backlog of pressing repair issues.
He confirmed in a second scrum that he initially did not know Kanye was not Canadian.
“I wish he was Canadian,” Tory told Mulligan.
The mayor’s office said that Tory was not briefed on Kanye prior to Pan Am’s announcement.
