5 ways to get your geek on at Fan Expo

From comics to video games to big name celebrities, there’s something for everyone to geek out on at Fan Expo this weekend.

Over 100,000 people are expected to walk through the doors of the Metro Toronto Convention Centre to celebrate the best in comics, science fiction, anime, gaming and horror.

Here’s a look at five ways to truly get your geek on at Fan Expo:

1. Celebrities: Like Harry Potter? How about The Walking Dead? Or is X-Files more your thing? Well you’re in luck, because you’ll be able to get autographs from the stars of those shows and many, many more. Some of the biggest voice actors in the world will be there too like Nolan North, Troy Baker and even Tom Kenny the voice of Spongebob Squarepants. If you’re lucky, sometimes they’ll be nice enough to give you a taste of their talent. Click here for a list of celebrities in attendance this year.

2. Get your gaming on: The video game section at Fan Expo seems to get bigger every year, and that’s not just the huge AAA titles. Xbox, PlayStation, Ubisoft, Warner Brothers, Disney and even Nintendo are letting fans pick up the controllers and test out some of the most anticipated games of the year like Rainbow Six: Siege, Guitar Hero Live, Splatoon, Halo 5: Guardians, Star Wars Battlefield, Lego Dimensions and the latest playsets for Disney Infinity.

Sony even brought its virtual reality headset Project Morpheus – although it may take some getting used to for some people.

3. Star Wars: With J.J. Abrams working hard to try to help you forget Star Wars episodes 1 thru 3, it seems like everyone wants to return to a galaxy far, far away. Star Wars has always had a huge place at Fan Expo, but this year it seems to have exploded. There are Millennium Falcon drones, Star Wars video games, comics, costumes and of course the annual Stormtrooper march by the 501st Legion. The force is strong with Fan Expo.

4. Celebrate local artists: Toronto has some amazing artistic talent and you’ll find great examples of it at Fan Expo. Stop by the dozens of booths, as well as Artists Alley, to check out some of their original comic books, sketches, paintings, crafts or jewellery and feel free to talk to them about the inspiration behind their work. Pick up an original piece for your collection. Some are even willing to create an original piece just for you – at a price of course!

5. Cosplay: Ever want to have your picture taken with Batman and Groot? Well you can at Fan Expo thanks to some of the amazing cosplay. While some just throw on some Princess Leia hair buns, others have spent months hand crafting some of the most detailed and dazzling outfits you’ve ever seen. And most of them are more than willing to stop for a photo. Check out some of the fantastic cosplay seen on Friday:
