Three dead after head-on crash on Hwy. 404

Three people are dead, and one person was taken to hospital after a head-on collision on Highway 404 near Gormley on Tuesday afternoon.

OPP Sgt. Kerry Schmidt said a southbound Ford Fusion crossed the median through a ditch, and struck a Toyota Camry travelling northbound.

All of the deceased — two men and one woman — were in the Toyota, while the male driver of the Ford suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

“It is absolutely horrific, and it was quite emotional for other witnesses that were here on scene trying to provide assistance,” Schmidt said.

The names and ages of those involved in the crash have yet to be released.

Reconstruction crews were on scene but there’s no word yet on what caused the Ford to cross into the northbound lanes.

“We’ll be looking at all factors; whether it’s fatigue, medical, impairment, distraction, any of those factors (but) we don’t have an answer on that right now,” Schmidt said.

Investigators are asking anyone who may have witnessed the crash to contact them.

The northbound lanes of Highway 404 were closed between Elgin Mills and Bloomington for about five hours.
