Man fatally stabbed in Toronto Community Housing building

One man is dead and a 25-year-old man is in custody after a stabbing at a Toronto Community Housing building.

It happened at 200 Wellesley St. E., north of Sherbourne Street, around 4 a.m. on Friday.

The stabbing happened in the 14th floor unit. The relationship between the suspect and the victim is not yet known.

Not much is known about this stabbing, but residents of TCH buildings have long complained about a lack of security at their homes.

Earlier this year, Mayor John Tory said the city was committing $371 million to a repair backlog, including installing better security cameras, repairing existing ones, and better lighting.

As part of the plan to bring “real change” at TCH, 521 of 5,500 closed circuit cameras will be digital by the end of the year. Fifty cameras will be installed in 17 communities, which is home to 14,000 residents.

If further funding is approved, the city and the TCH board would like to hire 94 new security staff starting in 2016.
