Trending: Startup will give you $10K for your wedding but, of course, there’s a catch

By Betty Wondimu

Think you’ve found everlasting love and could use a few more dollars to celebrate your special day? A new startup could be your answer.

A Seattle-based company is willing to pay for your dream wedding – as long as you’re willing to put your money where your mouth is when you say “until death do us part.”

SwanLuv is offering up to $10,000 to couples who successfully get approved for a wedding fund on their website.

All you need to do is:
1. Have a stable relationship
2. Be committed to host your wedding within two years of applying
3. Fill out an application online and then cross your fingers for approval!

But here’s the catch: If you end up getting divorced, you’ll have to pay the $10,000 back to SwanLuv – plus interest. It’s all in the “Wedding Fund Agreement” you’ll have to sign before cashing in the jackpot.

The company is set to launch their applications on Feb. 15, one day after Valentine’s Day. That date is not a coincidence. According to American Express, an estimated six million Americans got engaged on Valentine’s Day in 2013.

SwanLuv plans to use “statistics, online data and algorithm software technology” to determine how strong your relationship is, which will directly impact how big of a loan you receive. The company is also looking into offering free marriage counselling to members.

In an interview last week with GeekWire, SwanLuv CEO Scott Avy said the company will give higher interest rates to stronger relationships in order to “protect [SwanLuv] as a company.”

There will also be a clause in the wedding fund contract which makes one person responsible for the entire debt if the marriage ends as a result of abuse.

The divorce rate in the U.S. is currently 40 to 50 per cent for first-time marriages, and even higher for second and third marriages according to the American Psychology Association.

There’s no word yet on whether SwanLuv will extend its service to Canada.
