GO shuts down mobile app, focusing on mobile website

GO Transit has shut down its mobile app, with its existing mobile website taking its place.

The GO Mobile app was “decommissioned” on Saturday, GO said on its website.

“All the information you need is still just a click away through our mobile website, the Triplinx app, and more,” GO reassures its riders. All riders have to do is save the GO website to their home screen.

Metrolinx spokeswoman Anne Marie Aikins told The Toronto Star the app had technical issues that couldn’t be resolved without significant work, and that the mobile website works for just about every device.

In an email to CityNews, Aikins said the app “reached the end of its life cycle” and that the transit agency wants to focus on expanding and improving existing customer tools.

“It makes sense for us to focus resources on those to ensure they are the best they can be,” she said.

Aikins said GO riders were advised of the change a few weeks ago. While some riders may be frustrated with the app shutdown, she said they won’t feel that way for long.

“Once they get used to our mobile site we believe they will be pleased. I encourage them to send us feedback as we are constantly improving it.”

So far, GO has already added a new feature to its mobile website after getting feedback from customers who wanted to see the departures at Union Station in a prominent spot.

Riders can check the mobile website for trains and bus schedules, service advisories, and other information, or use the Triplinx trip planner. They can also sign up for On the GO alerts.

The app was launched in collaboration with the Digital Media Zone at Ryerson University in 2011.
