A Toronto police officer who fired 14 shots into the hood of a car during a daylight arrest in the Distillery District has been charged under the Police Services Act.
Police haven’t said what charges he’s facing.
It happened last September while officers were trying to stop a suspect who allegedly stole a vehicle and led them on a chase.
The bullets flew just steps away from scores of people enjoying lunch, and not far from a nearby private school and park.
“I saw two cop cars hit that [stolen] car and then about six cops got out and tried to get the man out of the car,” witness Bryan Martin told CityNews at the time. “He wouldn’t get out, the car was kind of pinned. He then revved the gas, and as soon as he did that … that’s when the cops opened fire.”
Police haven’t released the officer’s name, but CBC identified him as Const. Tash Baiati.
