Canadians commemorate Vimy Ridge Day as defining moment in our nation

Canadians across the country are observing Vimy Ridge Day which commemorates the victory and sacrifices of solidiers during the first world war.
On this day in 1917, 30,000 Canadians fought at Vimy Ridge in northern France and claimed victory. But it did not come without a cost as some 11,000 soldiers were either wounded or killed.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau called it a “moment that defined our nation.”
“As we mark the anniversary of this historic battle, we are reminded of our obligation – to the fallen, to our Veterans, and to their families – that we must meet with respect and gratitude. Our men and women in uniform have dedicated their lives to the defence of our country, and they deserve our unwavering support,” the PM said in a statement.
“On this day, let us thank those who have sacrificed – and those who continue to sacrifice-on behalf of our country so that we can enjoy the peace and freedoms we have today.”
To commemorate the battle many will be laying wreaths at local memorials. The Canadian War Museum will also hold special activities.
