Markham cat shelter seeks to escape condo developer’s bulldozer

City progress shows mercy for no one – and certainly not for rescued cats.
The North Toronto Cat Rescue, located in a nine-room bungalow in Markham, is slated to demolished by the end of 2016 to make way for a major condominium development.
And right now, there’s nowhere for the rescue’s 120 resident felines to go.
Since opening eight years ago, the shelter has had some 2,400 cats come through its doors – street cats that are trapped, neutered, contained and adopted out to forever homes in the GTA.
The house was donated to the organization in 2008, with the rescue paying minimal rent. The rescue is run entirely by 70 volunteers who visit during the day to feed and water the animals, and is supported through donations, sponsorship and adoption fees.
The organization is hoping donors will step forward to relocate the shelter.
“The challenge … is to buy or rent a new property or a plot of land, complete renovations and relocate all of the current cats quickly and safely,” reads a post on the NTCR website, stating the relocation could cost an estimated $1 million. “This is where your help is desperately needed to save these precious animals.”
The shelter goes through 750 pounds of cat litter every week.
