One year in jail for driver in Burlington Skyway crash

By The Canadian Press and News Staff

A truck driver who created a traffic nightmare on the Burlington Skyway bridge in 2014 will be spending time in jail.

Sukhvinder Rai was driving a dump truck with the bed raised when it slammed into the bridge on July 31, 2014.

The truck caused more than $1 million in damage and forced the bridge to be closed for four days.

Rai, 36, was convicted of dangerous driving in March and has been sentenced to one year in jail.

However, he was acquitted of impaired driving charges.

Tests showed Rai had nearly three times the legal limit of alcohol in his system at the time of the crash. However, an Ontario court judge ruled the blood test inadmissible because it was taken too long after the crash.

The court heard that police did not obtain a breath test from Rai until almost five hours after the accident. That was well beyond the three hour limit specified in the criminal code.
