Murder victim identified in fatal hit-and-run

By News Staff

Homicide detectives are investigating a deadly hit-and-run in downtown Toronto on Monday.

Steven Doyle, 27, was struck by a blue Dodge Caravan at George and Gerrard streets, near Jarvis Street, around 6 p.m.

He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver fled the scene, striking a bicycle and another vehicle before abandoning the van a short distance away. Police continue to search for the driver.

Police said the driver is East Indian, in his late 20s, with a slim build and dark-brown shoulder-length hair in a ponytail. He is approximately five-feet-eight-inches to five-feet-10-inches tall. He was wearing a dark shirt and prescription glasses with rectangular frames.

One witness told 680 NEWS the driver got into an argument with two men, then left and came back with his van.

“He had gotten into an argument, left George Street, came back in his van and deliberately went at the two guys with whom he had been in an argument. They got out of the way, and a third person, who as far as I know had not been involved in the argument, is the one who got killed,” the witness said.

This has not been confirmed by police.

Police said that just before the crash, the driver was heading north on George. Doyle was standing on the west side of the street. The driver deliberately went onto the sidewalk and hit Doyle, police allege.
