Freezing rain warning ends for Toronto, GTA

By News Staff

Boxing Day got off to a slippery start as much of the GTA, including Toronto, was under a freezing rain warning for most of the morning.

680 NEWS weather specialist Farrah Dhalla-Singh said areas north of Orillia will see a lot of snow.

“Along the 400 from Barrie to Vaughan, and along the city’s west end, freezing rain is expected,” she explained. “Not so much of a risk in the city of Toronto and the downtown core because temperatures are already above freezing so you’re likely to see rain today.”

Icy roads caused slippery driving conditions around the GTA.

Finch Avenue was closed in both directions between Dufferin and Bathurst for several hours.

Similar conditions could be seen across several other GTA roads. Toronto police warned drivers to be cautious when heading out.

Both TTC and GO Transit also reported weather related delays.

According to the city, salters were out on the streets at 4 a.m. in North York, Scarborough and Etobicoke.

The freezing rain warning ended around 10: 30 a.m.

Dhalla-Singh said most areas can expect rain as the temperature is set to warm up very quickly.

Toronto could break a Boxing Day record with a high expected of 11 C.

And if you’re travelling for the holidays, storms are in the forecast for the U.S. Northeast on Monday.

Pearson advises flyers check their flight status before leaving for the airport.
