A 22-year-old Newmarket man was sentenced on Wednesday to seven years in prison for killing a Markham woman and hiding her body in a suitcase last year.
Annie Li’s family reported her missing after last seeing the 36-year-old on June 12, 2016, in the area of Denison Street and Markham Road.
An investigation led police to Jiarui “Jerry” Tang, whom they arrested on Sept. 1 and charged with manslaughter.
He pleaded guilty on Jan. 6, the day police found Li’s remains in a park near Yonge Street and Sheppard Avenue.
In an agreed statement of facts, Tang admitted to hiring Li two or three times for sex. According to Tang the two got into an argument that became violent and he killed her by accidentally pushing his elbow into her neck. Tang’s lawyer says his client panicked after she died.
Tang’s lawyer adds his client is a permanent resident and he expects he will be deported to China when he’s up for parole.
