Fire at Islamic centre on Weston was deliberately set: police

A fire that broke out on the roof of The Reign of Islamic Daʿwah, an Islamic information centre, was deliberately set, Toronto police said Wednesday.

The fire began at the building on Weston Road near Black Creek Drive around 11 p.m. on Tuesday, Toronto Fire told CityNews.

The fire was quickly extinguished. However, a Toronto Fire spokesperson said police were called because of what was burning.

They did not say what that item was.

Police told The Canadian Press gas cans were found at the site, which suggests arson. Officers also said it’s too early to say whether the incident is a hate crime.

The same day, there was a fire at the Weston Masonic Temple on Weston, near Lawrence Avenue West. The two locations are about four kilometres from each other.

A Molotov cocktail was reportedly tossed through that building’s basement window. A 36-year-old man was arrested in that fire later that same night. On Wednesday, police said the arrest in that case was not connected to the investigation at the Islamic centre.

No one was injured in either fire.
